Best Grass Fed Beef Stew Crock Pot
Slow cooker hamburger stew combines the flavors of a burger with the comforts of a stew. This whole30 stew can also be made in the Instant Pot.
Updated 2022 with Instant Pot instructions
After a few minor tweaks, this recipes was chosen to be included in my first cookbook, The Easy & Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook. The recipe here has been updated to match the recipe in the cookbook.
A Hearty Hamburger Inspired Stew
Hamburger stew is a hearty, comfort food recipe. I tried to encompass hamburger flavors without it being too overpowering. I also wanted this stew to be paleo and whole30 compliant. If you're looking to lighten this hamburger stew up, omit the potatoes. If you do, this stew will be low-carb & keto friendly.
BROWNING YOUR MEAT
Should you brown your ground beef before adding it to the slow cooker? I always do specifically so I can drain the excess grease out before I start my stew. There's nothing I hate more than a greasy stew. If you are using a very lean ground meat, you may find that you normally don't need brown it before adding it to the slow cooker. Even when using the Instant Pot where browning the meat is a required step, I take the time to remove inner pot and drain the grease before I continue on making the stew.
WHAT TYPE OF POTATOES TO USE
I prefer to use chopped baby potatoes when I make this hamburger stew recipe. What you see in the pics chopped baby yellow potatoes. Waxy potatoes always work best for slow cooking because they hold their shape better than other forms of potatoes. Having said that, like most of my recipes, I encourage you to use the ingredients you have & like. Meaning, you can use your preferred potato whether it be a waxy potato like red or yellow, russet potato, sweet potato, etc. If you use non-waxy potatoes like russet or sweet potatoes, I suggest you cut them into larger chunks than you usually would. This will help them hold their shape during the cooking process and not turn mushy on you.

Storing Leftover Hamburger Stew
Storing leftover hamburger stew can be very easy if you know how to do it right. Make sure you have a good air and watertight storage container; you don't want to have any accidental leaks all over your refrigerator or freezer. If you are going to ladle your stew into containers while still hot, I recommend against using plastic containers since they might melt a bit because of the heat. Use a large spoon or ladle to scoop your hamburger stew into whatever container you choose, and your leftovers could last up to five days in the refrigerator or up to three months in the freezer. You can easily reheat this hamburger stew by pouring it from the container into your slow cooker or Instant Pot to sit on warm, or a pot on your stove on low. If you are reheating from frozen, set your container in the refrigerator to thaw overnight if you can, or at least six to eight hours.
I used a 6-quart slow cooker /or Instant Pot.
